The year is 1869.  The original Mormon pioneers have had just over two decades to settle into their new home while more than 70,000 more have made their way to the harsh desert of the Utah territory from the east and around the world.  This decade brings major change to the lives of the pioneers:  the Transcontinental Telegraph now means greater communication beyond their settlements and the Transcontinental Railroad opens the region to many more visitors and new industry begins to blossom.

This is also the year that Northwestern Mutual sells its first life insurance policy in the Utah territory.  Twelve years earlier, Northwestern Mutual had been formed to provide safety and security to its policyholders in the Midwest.  As the US population moved west, so did Northwestern Mutual.
